What Counts as Understanding?
A machine can produce the right answer. Does that mean it understands the question?
That one sentence hides several different questions. Can the system perform the task? Can it improve through experience? Does it connect symbols to meaning? Does it have any felt experience? Ability, learning, understanding, and consciousness can come apart, so evidence for one does not automatically prove the others.
The most famous attack on machine understanding is a thought experiment involving a locked room, and its power is that it feels obviously right the first time you meet it. Then someone points out what it leaves out, and it feels obviously wrong. Then you notice that the objection has a problem of its own. Sixty years of philosophers have not got past this, which should be a warning about how quickly anyone reaches a confident answer.
Underneath it sits a question about where an explanation is allowed to stop. If something uses relationships between things reliably enough to be useful, is there anything left to ask? Or does meaning require standing in the world, with a body and a history and something it is like to be you?
Nobody knows. Worse, it is not clear what evidence would settle it, which is what separates this from an ordinary unanswered question.
And the ground keeps moving underneath the argument. Every time machines take over something we treated as proof of a mind, chess, conversation, writing, the response is to decide that thing never counted after all. That may be honest refinement. It may also be a line we redraw to keep ourselves on the right side of it.
